New York CLE Requirements

New York Newly Admitted CLE Rules (First Two Years of Admission)

Total CLE Requirements: 16 transitional credits must be completed in each of your first two years of admission. Of the 16 required credits, 3 must be in Ethics, 6 must be in Skills, and 7 must be in Professional Practice or Practice Management.

The New York State CLE Board adopted the following changes, effective January 1, 2016, to the requirement that newly admitted attorneys complete all of their CLE credits in the traditional live classroom setting or by fully interactive videoconference (there is no change to the number or categories of credit required, nor to the requirement that they be fulfilled by attending accredited transitional courses):

  • Law Practice Management and Areas of Professional Practice credit may be completed in
any approved format, including nonparticipatory formats such as on-demand audio or video,
    or live broadcast.
  • Ethics and Professionalism credit may be completed in the traditional live classroom
setting; by fully interactive videoconference; or by simultaneous transmission with
synchronous interactivity, such as webconference, or teleconference, where questions are
    allowed during the program.
  • There is no change in the requirement for Skills credit, which still must be completed in the
traditional live classroom setting or by fully interactive videoconference.

CLE Deadline: Measured from the date of your admission.
Reporting: New York is a self-reporting jurisdiction.
Reporting Information: Each newly admitted attorney subject to New York’s transitional continuing legal education requirements is required to certify along with the submission of his or her biennial attorney registration statement that the attorney has satisfactorily completed 32 credit hours of transitional continuing legal education (16 credit hours in the first year of admission to the Bar, 16 credit hours in the second year of admission to the Bar) and that the attorney has retained the Certificates of Attendance or other documentation required by the CLE Board for the accredited courses or programs.
